Background
The overarching aim of the GPRA Mentors Program is to foster mentoring relationships between
parties interested in general practice. Participants may include secondary school students, medical
students, pre-vocational doctors, international medical graduates, GP Registrars, registrar liaison
officers, qualified GPs and other people involved in GP training.
By connecting people who are earlier on in their path to becoming a GP with those who have more
experience, it is hoped that the mentoring relationship is able to provide support for those wishing
to become general practitioners.
Participants
Secondary School Students

Mentees for Secondary School Students
As Mentees
Medicine is a very difficult course to enter. Having a mentor who has managed that stage may be
beneficial to students interested in a career as a doctor.
Mentors for Secondary School Students
- Senior medical student
- Pre-vocational doctor
- GP registrar
Medical Students
As Mentors
Medical students may serve as valuable mentors for both junior medical students as well as
secondary school students considering medicine as a career.
Mentees for Medical Students (Senior 4th Year+ Only)
- Secondary school students
- Junior medical students
As Mentees
The decreasing interest in general practice as a career is of concern to both AMSA and GPRA who
have together established the General Practice Student Network to promote GP amongst medical
students. Having a positive GP role model as a mentor is one way of continuing this work by
fostering interest and providing helpful, practical advice.
Mentors for Medical Students
- Pre-vocational doctor
- GP registrar
- RLO
- GPRA Alumni / Qualified GP
- Someone involved in GP training
Pre-vocational Doctors
As Mentors
As a mentor, a pre-vocational doctor may provide knowledge about the hospital system, intern and
resident jobs and advice about interviews and job applications to medical students. They may also
fill as similar role as medical student mentors for secondary school students.
Mentees for Pre-Vocational Doctors
- Secondary school students
- Medical students
As Mentees
These doctors have not yet committed to a training program. A mentor may provide inspiration for a
pre-vocational doctor to choose GP as a career or may be able to provide advice for the training
application process.

- RLO
- GPRA Alumni / Qualified GP
- Someone involved in GP training
General Practice Registrars
As Mentors
As a mentor, a GP Registrar can provide a valuable, first hand insight into the general practice
training program. This information and knowledge would be valuable to those considering medicine
in high school and those considering general practice as medical students or pre-vocational doctors.
Mentees for General Practice Registrars (Subsequent Term Only)
- Secondary school students
- Medical students
- Pre-vocational doctors
- GP Registrars in basic and advanced terms
As Mentees
GP Registrars have committed themselves to formal training in general practice. Formal mentoring
from a more senior GP or someone involved in the training process could aid registrars through what
could be a challenging process.
Mentors for General Practice Registrars
- RLOs
- Subsequent term GP Registrars if mentee is basic or advanced term

Mentees for OTDs/IMGs
As Mentees
OTDs and IMGs play a valuable role in the Australian health care system. The pathway to a career in
general practice is not necessarily straightforward and the additional complexities of having your
primary qualification earned outside of Australia can compound the issue. Mentors with particular
experience in this area can provide much needed support for these international doctors.
